Allen Brewer: "Verbatim"
and Kristina Estell: "Posture Is Everything"

Allen Brewer needs your help! The St. Paul artist is asking visitors to describe their favorite works of art in the MIA's collection. Blank forms will be distributed throughout the museum, upon which visitors can write about their favorite artworks. He'll collect these short comments and take them back to his studio to inspire new paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The number of works in the gallery will increase during the show, as new works are added every two weeks. "Verbatim" promises to be a fascinating study of the differences between seeing and writing, and an exploration of the limits of language with regard to art objects. Brewer recently exhibited his work as part of the EVA International Biennial in Ireland and is visiting professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

For a recent installation at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Germany, Kristina Estell covered the ceiling, walls, and windows of the gallery with a coating of liquid silicone. Painted in thin layers, the rubbery material dried into a drippy, powder-blue sheen that then slowly peeled off the wall. The soft skin bundled on the floor in delicate sheets and folds.

For her MAEP installation, Estell will build on the success of this previous piece by articulating new sheets of molded silicone in such a way to emphasize the material's opacity and delicate malleability, and to show how it can sculpt space. Estell's installations are delicately executed in order to imbue her materials with an intense presence. Estell is based in Duluth and has shown her work in numerous national and international solo shows.

The Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) is a curatorial department of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) dedicated to exhibiting and supporting artists living and working in the state of Minnesota. Begun in 1975 as a creative partnership with the MIA, the MAEP was founded by a group of regional artists interested in creating an innovative exhibition and programming space. What began as a year-long agreement has been extended into an ongoing relationship between the Minnesota artist community and the MIA.

MAEP panelists have a very important position in the Minnesota arts community by playing a direct role in the selection of MAEP exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Composed of seven members elected to two-year terms, the panel is entrusted with the responsibility of surveying the creative diversity of Minnesota artists and selecting those whose work shows exceptional promise and quality.
