Living Arts of Africa

1 – 2 p.m.

Discover objects for daily use and regalia fit for a king from the diverse continent of Africa. Learn about masquerade and divination, as well as customs for settling disputes and initiating young men and women into the community.

Dream of Eames? Nutty for Noguchi? Tonight's for you. Prep for the MIA's Design & Antiques Fair (Sept. 24-26 at the St. Paul Armory). Soak up 300 years of furniture design in the new exhibition "Chairevolution!" Drop in on a light and lively set of talks about furniture and antiques by the experts. Take in a cardboard furniture-making workshop and take home plans to make your own recycled pieces of livable sculpture. And check out the future of design in some YouTube videos that go from the practical to the preposterous.

Live music by The Idle Hands.

Educators' Evening

In celebration of "Art of the Native Americans: The Thaw Collection," the MIA invites you to partake in Educators' Evening. Enjoy a teacher's lounge with complimentary refreshments, cash bar, door prizes, special educator access to the exhibition, curator and educator talks, and free teacher resources designed to assist with meeting Minnesota state standards for U.S. History and Visual Art

Plus, enjoy live entertainment and activities during the museum's free Third Thursday event. Educators' Evening is held in partnership with the Walker Art Center.

Pick up a free resource CD and poster during Educators' Evening. The resource CD includes classroom curriculum and high quality images from the Fenimore Art Museum and the MIA's permanent collection.

Get a jump on Halloween at this Third Thursday--full of spooks and shivers!

Dig live music by Vampire Hands. Explore the MIA's dark side with special Halloween tours. Hear true stories about the MIA's haunts. Come dressed as your favorite artwork; but, please, for the safety of both art and guests, leave masks and flesh-eating zombies at home. No time for a costume? Pick up a free gift that'll get you in the Halloween spirit.

Third Thursday challenged some of the Twin Cities' freshest designers to create looks inspired by the MIA's collection, and they've worked for months to bring their creative visions to life. Tonight, their artistic genius takes center stage in a gala runway show. Join in and show off your great taste in wearable works of art--whether they're your own creations, fabulous thrift store finds, or the latest in pret-a-porter.
